East Coast Wednesday Wavefest
COASTALWATCH | SWELL DIARY
Monday’s steep run-up in SSE swell marked the beginning of an extended run of large SE swell across the region this week; arriving compliments of a deepening Tasman low currently located about 360 nautical miles east of Ballina. The low, in conjunction with ridges to the south and west, is supporting dual SSE and ESE wind-fetches across its various flanks; mostly exhibiting speeds of 20 to 35 knots.
The low will continue to support the fetches at these speeds as it drifted slowly eastward and the impact of the low was in full-effect on Monday arvo and Tuesday morning; driving a strong push in stormy SE swell to peaks of 5 to 8ft across northern NSW, while grading anywhere from 3 to 6ft across southern Queensland depending on each locations exposure.
In the SYDNEY region it was a jumbled 3 to 5ft on Tuesday, with shorter-range SE windswell making for wobbly conditions at most exposed breaks all day. Wednesday morning revealed cleaner, better-organised lines of E swell; running at a consistent 3 to 4ft between fairly infrequent 5ft sets.
Across VICTORIA, aA solid round of SW groundswell came in below expectations over the weekend; by all reports peaking on Sunday in the 4 to 6ft range across the Surf Coast, while grading to a heavier 6 to 8ft plus along exposed beaches. The tail end of the swell was still running at slightly lower levels on Monday morning; still up around 3 to 5ft across the Surf Coast, while still too big for the exposed beaches.
For the immediate future we can expect a further ease in SW swell to open up a wider variety of surfable options state-wide. Having said that, the exposed beaches should still be holding challenging 4 to 6ft conditions, while the Surf Coast fares better under NW winds at a clean 3 to 4ft.
