Our Member Of The Month for August is Phillip Smith, who calls Redhead on the NSW Mid Coast home. His shots in the member photo gallery caught our eye, so we gave him the good news - for being member of the month we are sending him a Streetboardz cruiser worth $550. Congrats Phil!

Name: Phill Smith
Occupation: Security NSW Health
Age: 51

What part of the coast do you call home?
My hometown was Taree, my home break then was a Point break close to Old Bar then I moved to Newcastle in the 80's, recently moved to Redhead.

Tell us a bit about the surf around there?
There are some great breaks around where I grew up

How long have you been surfing?
Started surfing when I was about 13 and surfed madly til about 30, then occasionally and rarely up to now. I bought a Fish recently and plan to get back in the water a lot more and spend some time surfing with our 2 boys. I have lost all my surf fitness, so it is like learning to surf all over again. Plan to spend a bit of time on the fish and then get back onto a shorter 5'10'' or 6 footer.

What was your last session like?
My last session was at Redhead last Sunday, it was only a couple of feet, fell off on my first take off, but caught a few nice little waves after that.

Where else has your surfing taken you?
I have only surfed the East Coast of Oz, and when I was younger I would travel up the coast when I had time off work camping and surfing my way up to the town of 1770. I haven’t been out of Australia as yet, but our sons are keen to get me to Bali.

Best swell you’ve ever seen/ridden?
Best swells I have ridden would be the South / south east swells rolling around onto the Point,  with only a couple of mates and me there to enjoy it.

Dream destination?
Would have to be Indonesia.

When did you first pick up a camera?
I first picked up a camera when I was about 18, I used to take photos between surfs. Regrettably I have lost a few of the film rolls and photos but still have a few left. I have been putting a few of my old photos up on Coastalwatch plus since I joined it. Don't get too excited cause they are very old school (so my boys tell me).

When did you sign up as a Coastalwatch Plus member?
Joined up Coastalwatch Plus a couple of months ago.

What features have you found helpful?
Surf Forecast and more importantly the free fit to surf to help me get back in the water.
