Fanning takes the crown

Surfing Australia would like to offer its congratulations to Mick Fanning after he claimed the 2007 Foster’s ASP World Championship Crown. Fanning took out the Hang Loose Pro overnight at Imbatuba, Brazil giving him an unassailable lead in the 2007 ASP Foster’s championship title race going into the final ASP event of the year in Hawaii next month.

Fanning from Coolongatta on Queensland’s Gold Coast is the first Australian to claim the title since Mark Occhilupo in 1999. Fanning joins the list of other Australian World Champions including Midget Farrelly (64), Nat Young (66), Peter Townend (76), Wayne “Rabbit” Bartholemew (78), Mark Richards (79 – 82), Tom Carroll (83 – 84), Damien Hardman (87,91) and Barton Lynch (88).

Since bursting out of the Pro Junior tour in the mid 90’s, taking on the rigours of the ASP WQS and qualifying to the ASP WCT in 2002 Mick Fanning has posted an outstanding career of big results and is a product of the Surfing Australia development pathway.

Congratulations Mick – we are all so proud to see you bring home the 2007 ASP Fosters World Championship Crown.
