Smashed In Vicco: A Couple Of The Lockdown State’s Finest Get Caught In The Mangler

COASTALWATCH | NICK CARROLL

For a good chunk of this winter, it seemed like the Vicco crew had become the poor cousins of the surfing world.

The Goldie was pumping, Sydney was 10-15’ every third day, and Bells? Well, Bells was flat and dead onshore.

All that’s turned around in the past month, and if you’ve avoided the Melbourne lockdown, you’ve for sure been scoring your head off.

But the reawakening hasn’t been without its cost for a couple of the State’s finest. A couple of weeks ago Jack Stevenson, son of Torquay legend Craig “Pinhead” Stevenson, was towing a slab down the west coast with a buddy when things went horribly wrong. After hours of being spat out, suddenly, he wasn’t. The result? A compound fracture of the lower leg and a serious shoulder injury.

Then this past weekend, renowned Port Campbell charger Brendan Ryan was caught amidships at another semi remote reef. Result this time: broken pelvis and some internal organ damage.

According to eyewitnesses, Rhino was on his stand-up moving through the impact zone when a set wave caught him inside. The wave snapped his board and he had to use one half to get in. People were quick to help but the remote location meant ambulance help took some time to arrive.

Jack’s in a wheelchair for a couple of months. Brendan’s recuperating in the Alfred Hospital in Melbourne after a few painful hours on the beach and a helicopter ride up to Lockdown Central. CW wishes them both all the best in the recovery process.
