    Short-Term Analysis

A rise of strong west windswell developed through the week as we saw a strong extension of west winds trailing across the upper bite. That fetch generated a direct and strong push of short to mid period SW swell along exposed areas Friday and then dropped off into Saturday. Midcoast saw bumpy and lumpy wind waves while South Coast saw more sizable S swell pushing up through to Saturday. High pressure will finally move in this weekend and result in improving weather conditions, which will open up more options for surf with gradually easing levels of WSW swell and SSW swells over the next several days.

The complex storm that crossed the state Friday will have SSW wind lumps to sort out so expect a bit of hangover Saturday. After Friday’s gale force winds, short period SSW windswell chop and will drop off quickly but still leave some sea sickness through the open breaks. As well, additional SSW groundswell that had filled in off the core of this passing storm system will continue to dish up longer period SSW sets along the south exposed areas. This combo of swells will hold up head high conditions on South Coast standouts Saturday before easing. However, size will be cut off from MidCoast due to the southerly position of the fetch and midcoast will drop off substantially as winds alleviate, leaving only residual SW windswell.

Conditions clear up even more as we head into early next week. The weather clears and settles calmly under a high pressure system. This is looking good for Sunday morning with a welcomed light wind and fair skies. Decreased levels of the combined SW swells to begin to sort out and organise, thus leading to a better run of small range surf for the open and exposed breaks. Remember wave size will drop off steadily through midweek, so emerging clean and improving conditions, but this will only really benefit the open areas capturing the remaining SW swell and leftover sets.
